What do I do right after a minor crash (only body damage, nobody hurt)?

A minor crash is stressful even when nobody is hurt. The steps are simple and they protect you later: safety first, evidence second, words carefully. What you do in the first 20 minutes decides how easy the claim will be.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Move to a safe place if the cars can move, and turn on the hazard lights. Check that everyone is unhurt — if anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
  2. Photograph everything: both cars from several angles, the damage, the license plates, the road, skid marks, and traffic signs. More photos are better than fewer.
  3. Exchange details with the other driver: full name, phone number, insurance company and policy number, license plate, and the car's make and model. Photograph their documents if they allow it.
  4. Note the time, place, weather, and what happened, in your own words, while it is fresh. If there are witnesses, ask for their names and phone numbers.
  5. Do not admit fault at the scene — not even politely. Say only what happened factually. Fault is decided later, from the evidence.
  6. Call the police if the other driver has no documents, refuses to share details, seems impaired, leaves the scene, or the damage is larger than minor.
  7. Report the crash to your own insurer the same day, even if the damage looks small. Late reports can complicate a claim.

Stop and call a professional if…

  • Anyone is hurt, even slightly — call 911 and do not move the injured person unless there is danger.
  • The other driver is aggressive, impaired, or refuses to cooperate — stay in your car, lock the doors, and call the police.
  • The cars cannot move safely or are blocking traffic dangerously — call the police and stay visible and safe.

Tip: keep a pen, paper, and a phone charger in the car. Photos with timestamps are the strongest evidence you can have — take them before anything is moved, if it is safe to do so.

  2. Fotografirajte sve: oba auta iz nekoliko kutova, štetu, tablice, cestu, tragove kočenja i prometne znakove. Više fotografija bolje je nego manje.
  3. Razmijenite podatke s drugim vozačem: puno ime, broj telefona, osiguravajuću kuću i broj police, tablicu te marku i model auta. Fotografirajte dokumente ako dopusti.
  7. Prijavite sudar vlastitom osiguranju isti dan, čak i ako šteta izgleda mala. Kasne prijave mogu zakomplicirati zahtjev.
