Why is the sky blue?

Sunlight looks white, but it is really a mix of all colours. When sunlight reaches the air, the blue part bounces around — scatters — more than the other colours. So blue light comes to our eyes from every part of the sky.

How it works, step by step

1. Sunlight is a mix of all the colours of the rainbow.
2. The air is full of tiny bits too small to see.
3. When sunlight hits them, the blue light scatters — bounces in all directions — more than red or yellow light.
4. That scattered blue light reaches our eyes from everywhere, so the whole sky looks blue.
5. At sunset, sunlight travels through much more air. The blue gets scattered away, and the reds and oranges are left — that is why sunsets are red.

• At sunset, watch the sky near the Sun turn orange and red as the blue disappears.

Tip: on the Moon there is no air at all, so the sky there is black — even in the middle of the day.

Zašto je nebo plavo?

Sunčeva svjetlost izgleda bijelo, ali zapravo je mješavina svih boja. Kad dopre do zraka, plavi dio se odbija na sve strane — raspršuje se — više od ostalih boja. Zato nam plava svjetlost dolazi u oči sa svih strana neba.

Kako to radi, korak po korak

1. Sunčeva svjetlost mješavina je svih boja duge.
2. Zrak je pun sitnih čestica koje se ne vide.
3. Kad ih svjetlost pogodi, plava se svjetlost raspršuje — odbija na sve strane — više od crvene ili žute.
4. Ta raspršena plava svjetlost dopire nam u oči odasvud, pa cijelo nebo izgleda plavo.
5. Pri zalasku sunca svjetlost prolazi kroz mnogo više zraka. Plava se rasprši usput, a ostanu crvene i narančaste — zato su zalasci crveni.
