My check engine light came on and I am far from anyone — what do I do first?

Do not panic. The check engine light is a warning, not a diagnosis — it only tells you the car found something wrong. What you do next depends on one thing: is the light flashing, or steady? That difference changes everything.

How to do it, step by step

Look at the light: flashing or steady? Also notice how the car feels — normal, shaking, losing power?
If the light is FLASHING: pull over as soon as it is safe, turn the engine off, and call for help. A flashing light can mean the engine is being damaged right now. Do not keep driving.
If the light is STEADY and the car drives normally: slow down, avoid the highway if you can, and head for the nearest mechanic or service station. Drive gently — no hard acceleration.
Check the fuel cap: a loose or cracked fuel cap is a common harmless cause. With the engine off, tighten the cap until it clicks. The light may go off by itself after a few drives.
Check the gauges: temperature and oil pressure. If the temperature is high or the oil light is also on, stop and call for help — do not drive on.
Do not open the hood next to a hot engine, and do not try to fix anything you cannot see clearly.
Get to a mechanic as soon as you can. A mechanic's scanner reads the fault code and tells you what is actually wrong — the light alone cannot.
